Trust in the Trenches: The Foundation of Successful MEP Partnerships
When a mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) contractor engages Castle Contracting as a project partner, they’re enlisting the expertise of a collaborative, reliable ally that’s committed to their success.

When a mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) contractor engages Castle Contracting as a project partner, they’re enlisting the expertise of a collaborative, reliable ally that’s committed to their success.
In short, they’re gaining a partner they can trust in the trenches.
We’re proud of the reputation we’ve garnered as the civil contractor that’s willing to take on—and successfully deliver—the most complex projects. With hundreds of jobs and millions of feet of trenching experience under our belt, Castle has the resources and expertise to overcome any challenge.
Here are a few factors that fuel our MEP partnerships:
Upfront planning sets jobs up for success
Before excavation begins, we first need to assess and understand a project’s specific goals, challenges and risks.
Our collaborative preconstruction and estimating process enables us to develop comprehensive proposals that clearly specify the scope of our activities and protect our MEP partners from unexpected costs. If scope changes arise during the project, we focus on identifying solutions rather than generating endless change orders that put our partners in difficult positions with their clients.
Ultimately, we’re committed to ensuring that our scope of work fully supports and aligns with our MEP partner’s total scope of work.
Craft-to-craft collaboration
MEP partnerships require genuine collaboration in the field. Unlike the typical construction sequence where trade partners work near each other, MEP projects require civil and MEP craft workers to coordinate closely in active excavations.
Our team members must integrate seamlessly with MEP crews to ensure that systems are installed accurately, efficiently and safely. This requires us to remain in lockstep on logistics, scheduling and problem-solving. If our civil crews encounter an unexpected obstacle during excavation, we work together with our MEP partner to develop routing solutions rather than simply identifying the issue.
This approach has been evident with the growth of Castle’s Omaha team, which has built an ongoing partnership with Grunwald Mechanical Contractors & Engineers and The Waldinger Corporation. Castle has successfully tackled many projects with both clients across the region, including replacing utility systems across the downtown district involving complex aged infrastructure that require critical thinking and innovative solutions in the field.
When Castle works for MEP contractors, we become part of their team because our success is directly tied to theirs. Our relationships are built on a foundation of trust.
Maintaining a big-picture perspective
Castle’s MEP partners rely on our expertise and deep knowledge of both civil and MEP processes. We must thoroughly understand the work, production and system requirements so that we can provide the right means and methods to accomplish the overall design and installation goals.
This breadth of knowledge enables our crews to think ahead and prepare excavations that truly support MEP craft workers, rather than creating obstacles they have to work around. It also equips our teams to effectively communicate with MEP crews in the field throughout all project phases.
Navigating challenging scenarios
Because no two sites are the same, we’re constantly thinking ahead to anticipate—and resolve—potential problems, conflicts and coordination issues.
Many of our MEP projects involve solving challenges on active campus environments that demand innovative solutions.
On the Washington University Medical Campus in the city of St. Louis, we've collaborated with icon Mechanical on steam line repairs that required night shifts to avoid interfering with the emergency room at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The work involved careful coordination with hospital operations to ensure that patient care remained the top priority.
Complex MEP projects require civil contractors who can adapt quickly, communicate effectively with facility managers and develop solutions that minimize disruption to critical operations.
A focus on building relationships
Castle is fortunate to enjoy active relationships with numerous MEP contractors.
The most rewarding aspect of these partnerships is the opportunity to build long-term relationships that develop over time. We might start with a small service call—such as helping a plumbing contractor with an emergency water main repair—and gradually build trust that leads to larger project opportunities.
We're currently working with longtime partner PayneCrest Electric on a substation job in the city of St. Louis that’s a direct result of our team’s success in delivering a series of smaller service-related projects for this agriculture and food processing company. Castle is also supporting PayneCrest’s electrical work on a fourth data center project in the Omaha area, adding efficiency to the project.
And our current involvement on a manufacturing campus expansion project in St. Louis reflects our enduring relationship with icon Mechanical and Murphy Company, which advocated for Castle to be included on the project because of our proven track record of successfully delivering complex jobs for them.
If you ask any of our long-term MEP partners what they value most about their work with Castle, they’ll probably tell you they appreciate that we always take care of them. In other words, we understand their work, anticipate their needs and deliver solutions that keep their projects moving forward efficiently, safely and successfully.
