Barnes-Jewish Hospital Campus Renewal
St. Louis, MO
Castle completed the $11 million design-build civil scope, supporting the $655-million, 560,000-square-foot tower replacement for the demolished Queeny Tower on the Barnes-Jewish Hospital campus. The excavation and site utilities scope included structural demolition, site clearing, earth moving, asphalt paving, concrete paving, site cast-in-place concrete, and installing storm sewer and subdrainage systems.
Minimal space separated the project site from two medical buildings and two major open main roads on all sides, requiring the project team to implement extensive traffic control protocols to complete mass excavation and hauling within the high-traffic area, while protecting the pedestrians, motorists and construction workers.
Evolving healthcare models prompted the demolition and replacement of Queeny Tower (est. 1965). The design of the new 10-story tower prioritizes private inpatient rooms, high efficiency, and comfort, meeting modern technological and care needs. Additional design elements include the tower sitting atop a six-story podium, a southern entry plaza, and further improvements such as enhanced open and public areas, patient/visitor parking, as well as arrival and departure.
