BJC Healthcare Campus Renewal
St. Louis, MO
The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Plaza West Tower is a new inpatient hospital facility along Kingshighway at Barnes-Jewish Hospital Plaza in St. Louis, Missouri. As a major phase of BJC HealthCare’s Campus Renewal, the project advances a multi-phase vision to renew the Washington University Medical Campus through new construction and renovations focused on elevating the patient and family experience.
The civil construction project team delivered outstanding quality, a comprehensive safety culture and an overall excellent project experience. Major excavation and site utilities scopes included:
- Structural demolition
- Site clearing
- Earth moving
- Asphalt paving
- Concrete paving
- Site cast-in-place concrete
- Storm sewer and subdrainage system installations
Using a design-build delivery method, the project team streamlined communication with the client, reduced the project schedule and effectively prepared the site for all future construction work needed to replace the 55-year-old Queeny Tower patient pavilion with a new 16-story facility.
The approximately 632,000-square-feet, structure's modern design supports an all-private, inpatient environment for advanced heart and vascular care and other complex services. The tower's podium—housing imaging, pre- and post-operative preparation and recovery, as well as additional clinical and support services—provides a sound structural base for 280 all-private inpatient beds, spanning 224 acute care and 56 intensive care unit (ICU) rooms, and approximately 30,200 square feet of dedicated kitchen/dining, public and administrative spaces. The thoughtful layout of the building's technology, treatment spaces and amenities provide a cohesive, hospitality-inspired experience for patients, families and staff.
